On 18 August 2025, the Texas Department of Public Safety initiated issuance of redesigned driving licences and ID cards, incorporating several high security features aimed at enhancing counterfeit resistance and reinforcing public safety.

The key updates include:
- Tamper-resistant polycarbonate substrate – the cards are fabricated from durable polycarbonate material that is significantly more resistant to manipulation and reproduction, aligning with American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators standards.
- REAL ID compliance marker – a laserengraved black star, located in the upper right corner, replaces the previous gold star or yellow circle to denote compliance with federal REAL ID requirements. The transition to this new star also introduces deeper engraving that better resists tampering or surface manipulation.
- Improved personal data layout – personal information (eg. date of birth, licence number, issuance/expiration dates, organ donor indicator) has been reorganised to improve legibility and facilitate verification by law enforcement and other authorities.
- Distinctive visual identifiers – a novel blue Texas-shaped icon in the bottom right corner aids quick state identification for frontline personnel.
- Backward compatibility – existing, unexpired licences and ID cards remain valid until their printed expiration dates; there is no immediate requirement for replacement.
