Fraud Report Shows Deepfake ID Incidents on the Rise
A sharp rise in AI-assisted identity fraud is reshaping cybersecurity on a global scale, as highlighted in the 2025 Identity Fraud Report released by the Entrust Cybersecurity Institute.
The report paints a troubling picture of escalating cyber threats, with deepfake incidents now occurring every five minutes in 2024. Fraudsters have increasingly turned to deepfake technology, using sophisticated tools to orchestrate hyper-realistic biometric fraud attacks. Such methods now account for 40% of biometric fraud cases and have been employed to facilitate account takeovers, phishing scams, and fraudulent account openings.
The report reveals a 244% year-over-year surge in digital document forgery, signifying a shift from physical counterfeit documents to digitally manipulated credentials. Digital forgeries now represent 57% of document fraud cases. The proliferation of generative AI and ‘software-as-a-service’ (SaaS) platforms has enabled perpetrators to refine and scale their methods, particularly through identity injection attacks.
