Nigeria, EU Deepen Border and Migration Partnership

Nigeria Ministry of Interior has outlined a significant expansion of cooperation with the European Union (EU) on border management and migration governance following high-level talks in Abuja on 4 February 2026.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo briefed a delegation led by European Commission DG Migration and Home Affairs Deputy Director Johannes Luchner, and EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot. The discussions focused on shifting from reactive responses to a preventive, technology-driven model for managing irregular migration and cross-border crime.

Nigeria highlighted recent deployments of an Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS), integration with the IOM-backed MIDAS border management platform, and a national eBorder system now covering more than 60% of land borders. Operational capacity is being reinforced through the recruitment of around 10,000 additional officers and the roll-out of seven solar-powered border posts, with seven more planned.
