Sri Lanka Starts Digital ID Transformation

Sri Lanka has embarked on an ambitious digital transformation project with the introduction of the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity (SL-UDI) programme. This initiative aims to replace the country’s traditional physical identification card system with a digital ID infrastructure, modernising identity verification and access to services for its citizens.

The government has procured 350 units of biometric hardware as part of the programme’s initial phase. This hardware includes high-resolution cameras and fingerprint scanners designed to capture and authenticate unique biometric data. The biometric hardware is a crucial step towards ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the SL-UDI system. By using biometric authentication, the programme aims to reduce identity fraud and enhance service delivery across public and private sectors.
