Cameroon

On 17 February 2025, Cameroon launched a new generation biometric ID card system. The rollout, managed by German tech firm Augentic under a 15-year contract with Cameroon’s General Delegation for National Security (DGSN) began with online pre-enrolment, followed by physical enrolment in regional capitals. The new system aims to issue national identity cards within 48 hours of application.

Cameroon has set a new standard in secure identification technology by becoming what it claims to be the first country in Africa to adopt the ID-1 portrait format, in line with the latest guidelines from ICAO 1.
