EU Pushes Ahead on Digital IDs

The European Union (EU) is making significant progress in its digital identity initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to standardising digital identification systems across member states. These efforts aim to enhance security within the region, with various countries implementing advanced digital ID solutions.

Romania eID

Romania is among the nations involved in this transition, with plans to launch its electronic ID (eID) card programme this month. Romania joined the EU in 2007, but is not yet part of the Schengen Area, although partial accession was approved for air and sea borders starting in March 2024.

The rollout of the card programme will begin in Cluj County, following government approval of three regulatory decisions.
