Biometric Sensors for Automotive Authentication

Following last month’s exploration of vehicle licence plate identification (a slight departure from the usual focus of ID & Secure Document News™ on securing identities and payments), this month we delve into advances in automotive biometric technology.

The automotive industry is seeing a surge in demand for biometric solutions that enhance identification and authentication processes. Two notable companies operating in this space, Infineon Technologies and Rheinmetall Dermalog Sensortec, have developed innovative biometric sensor technologies, utilising fingerprint and facial recognition, respectively, to improve vehicle access, security, and user personalisation.

Infineon’s new fingerprint sensors

Infineon Technologies AG recently introduced automotivequalified fingerprint sensor chips: CYFP10020A00 and CYFP10020S00. These sensors deliver high accuracy and cost-effective biometric performance, providing drivers with an efficient and user-friendly alternative to more conventional methods such as entering a PIN or using a smartphone to authenticate vehicle access or authorise payments.
