Artificial intelligence (AI) is already improving biometric authentication systems, enhancing their accuracy and efficiency. However, advances in AI have also introduced new vulnerabilities, particularly through AI-driven spoofing techniques and deepfake technologies.

Deepfakes utilise AI to create highly realistic synthetic representations of individuals’ faces or voices. These can deceive biometric systems that rely on facial recognition or voice analysis. In its recent report 1. The Institute for Security and Technology (IST) notes that such technologies have already compromised biometric authentication systems in several instances.

One threat that seems likely from AIattacks is towards liveness detection, which is a critical component of biometric systems, designed to distinguish between live inputs and fraudulent attempts.
