In years to come, the ID and secure document research community will look back at the year 2024 with a hint of nostalgia as it fondly remembers the days of human- engineered counterfeits prior to the age of artificial intelligence (AI) enabled security attacks. The keynote address at the recent ODDS conference in Lisbon explained what we can look forward to.

If the afternoon seminar, prior to the start of the conference programme, on the potential effects of AI on the document security industry didn’t give the attendees at ODDS 2024 serious cause for concern, then Jordan Brough’s keynote address certainly did. Jordan is a Senior Forensic Document Examiner at the Homeland Security Investigations Forensic Laboratory in the US, and by all outward appearances seems a cheerful, personable type of science guy. But within minutes of the start of his keynote ‘AI-Driven Counterfeits: The Possibilities and How to Fight Them’ he recounted how he had manipulated several popular AI generative tools into becoming powerful counterfeiting assistants.
