New Document Issue

The Directorate of Bulgarian Identity Documents has announced the introduction of a new model of ID card, which will contain biometric data of two fingerprints and facial biometric data, in addition to the physical image.

The document is issued by the police on behalf of the Ministry of Interior and is the main form of identification across Bulgaria. All Bulgarians, aged 14 and over, are obliged by law to carry their identity cards.

The new generation of Bulgarian ID cards offers several advantages, especially for citizens travelling within the European Union. These cards enable Bulgarian citizens to use electronic checkpoints at border crossings, expediting the control process by authorities in other countries. Additionally, with the future implementation of an electronic identity certificate, citizens will be able to authenticate themselves in a virtual environment when accessing electronic services and information systems.
