In a move to enhance security and streamline travel processes, Liechtenstein has introduced a new national identity card for travel and a revamped residence card for EU/EEA/CH citizens. These documents, launched this month, comply with Regulation (EU) 2019/1157, emphasising Liechtenstein’s commitment to staying at the forefront of secure and efficient identification.

The new residence card for EU/EEA/ CH citizens adopts the same design template of the national identity card, showcasing a cohesive and unified approach to identity documentation. This strategic alignment not only simplifies the visual recognition of the documents but also establishes a seamless connection between the two, reducing the potential for confusion.

As a member state of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Liechtenstein citizens already enjoy the privileges of freedom of movement within other EFTA countries, as outlined in the EFTA convention. Additionally, Liechtenstein’s membership in the European Economic Area (EEA) grants its citizens the freedom to live and work across all EEA member states.

One noteworthy feature of Liechtenstein’s national identity card is its function as an alternative to a passport for citizens exercising their right of free movement in EFTA and the EEA. While not strictly mandatory for entry, the card offers a convenient and widely accepted means of proving nationality.

Liechtenstein’s approach aligns with the broader European context, where EEA and Swiss citizens can, in theory, use alternative means to prove nationality if unable to present a valid national identity card or passport.

The innovative design of the new card incorporates state-of-the- art security features to ensure the integrity and authenticity of the document.
